When I entered my sixth grade social studies class, our teacher told us he expected us to read a daily newspaper. If we couldn’t afford one, he would provide them for free at the beginning of each class. He felt that we should know something about our world and what affects it. As a New Jersey youth, I began getting the now-defunct, New York Herald Tribune. That was 45 years ago and I have never stopped receiving a daily paper.
Many people now feel that we are on the verge of another great movement for social justice. Will this movement be able to transcend our racial tragedy and meet the complex challenges of the 21st century? Whatever one thinks of Barack Obama, that is really The Hope that he has come to symbolize. But as attractive and charismatic as he can be, he is still only one man. It’s going to take many millions of Americans to say No to The Deal and mean it, before that hope becomes any kind of reality.

I believe we need a different kind of role model for our girls, teenagers, and young women than I see in the media. These women who were not written into our history books were women who changed our world for the better against difficult odds. Make a time where the entire family can read together. Not reading aloud, just being in the same room and reading. If the child watches you read it will inspire them to as well.
Love of reading and appreciation of history is not taught. It is caught. Children love stories. History is just stories we can tell to our children. Tell them the stories we cherish, and they will begin to question and to read.

Make sure that you take a number one fan approach to your child’s reading progress. You want to not just know what they are reading, but how well. You want to know if the book challenges them or is too easily to properly place them with the right level of book so they are constantly learning.
